Web scraping for online reputation monitoring

Updated: Feb 12, 2021

Warren Buffet once said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”

Do you agree with Warren Buffet?

What does reputation monitoring and management mean for companies?

In my view, it is simply having the control over what people see online about my company or its product. As a business owner, I want to know what is being talked about my company and products online. I want to deal with negative publicity before it affects my business.

Samsung sells thousands of products in 100+ countries. For a company like Samsung, it is nearly impossible to maintain online reputation through traditional methods. We need to find better and automated ways to do this.

It would be great if there is a way to get notified if there is a negative publicity. Even better if it can be viewed on a nice dashboard. The best way to go about this problem is to constantly monitor

the websites that are most influential in your niche. It might be, online business directories, B2B portals or mighty search engines itself. The best and affordable way to get the data is by web scraping.

Once data is collected, it is fed into powerful sentiment analysis tools to identify the polarity of reviews and discussions. If people are talking negatively about a particular subject, say the poor battery performance of a mobile phone, the reputation monitoring system will be able to notify

the that something is wrong with the battery of their mobile. We get smart triggers and actionable insights from the data. Using visualization tools, you can visualize and identify areas that need more attention.

Repeated scrapes can bring in new reviews as they appear on the sites.

You scraped reviews but are you disappointed seeing too many negative reviews?

You can turn negative reviews in favor of your business. There is a reason for them to write a negative review. The user might be using the product in the wrong way, maybe your product is faulty or they might be even spamming. You have to engage with the customer to find out the problem and prevent the recurrence. If those are spam reviews, you can identify and ask the portal to remove it.

If you don’t have an online reputation monitoring strategy yet, this is the time to start thinking about it.
